It is one of the great herbal systems of the world, with an unbroken tradition going back to the 3rd century BC.
Throughout history it has never ceased to develop. This process continues today with the development of modern techniques. Because of its systematic approach and clinical effectiveness it has influence on the practice of medicine in the East and more recently it has a growing popularity in the West.
In China herbal medicine forms a major part of healthcare and is often practiced alongside western medical treatments.
Chinese herbal medicine is based on concepts of yin and yang. It aims to understand and treat the underlying imbalance to recreate harmony and a feeling of well being and health.
The tradition places great emphasis on lifestyle management to prevent disease before it occurs.
Chinese medicine recognises that health is more than the absence of disease.

The governing body of Chinese herbal medicine (RCHM) believes it has a role to play in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • skin disease, including eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, urticaria
  • gastro- intestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, ulcerative colitis
  • Gynaecological conditions, including pre-menstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhoea, endometriosis and infertility
  • chronic fatigue syndromes
  • respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, chronic coughs, allergic and perennil rhinitis and sinusitis
  • psychological problems e.g. depression, anxiety
  • urinary conditions including chronic cystitis

Who can take Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese medicine can be used by people of any age or constitution. Your practitioner will take any previous or current illness or medication into account before prescribing herbs to you.

What are the herbs like and how much will they cost?

Herbs are now available in a number of forms. The traditional method is to boil a mixture of dried herbs to make a tea or to use pills.
Nowadays the most common and convenient way of prescribing are freeze dried powders, which are prepared much like instant coffee by diluting them with boiling water.
Herbs often taste bitter, but the vast majority of people get used to the taste very quickly.
The cost varies depending on the herbs used, as a guide it is round about £17.50 a week.

Are herbs safe?

Chinese herbs are very safe when prescribed correctly by a properly trained practitioner.
Adverse reactions are very rare. We are using only approved suppliers by the register of Chinese herbal medicine. The herbs must undergo a rigorous independent audit of quality assurance.
We do not use any endangered species and we are greatly concerned about the threat to wild animal and rare plants.
