Maderotherapy, also known as “Wood Therapy,” is an ancient holistic massage technique with origins in Asian countries. More recently, in the 1980’s, a therapist in Colombia, South America, decided to update and perfect this old massage technique by redesigning the various wooden tools to a smoother and more anatomically shaped finish so they can be used more comfortably and more effectively, not only for health but also aesthetic purposes.
The Maderotherapy technique involves a series of movements and uses various wooden tools, such as rollers, contouring boards and mushroom shapers to massage and stimulate different areas of the body.
The primary goal is to reduce the appearance of cellulite, break down fat deposits and reaffirm and tone the layers of the skin. Maderotherapy is often used for body contouring or sculpting and aims to reduce inches off different parts of the body like hips and thighs.
Beyond it’s aesthetic benefits, Maderotherapy helps to reduce stress and anxiety, promote relaxation and better sleep, activate the lymphatic system, improve circulation and the production of elastin and collagen. It’s also used to alleviate muscle and joint pain.
A typical session varies between 30 min (1 area treated) and 60 min (3 areas treated) and involves applying pressure with the wooden tools in a strategic manner to target problem areas. Problem areas are usually front and back of thighs, flanks, waist, abdomen and legs. The intensity and techniques can vary depending on the desired outcome and the individual’s tolerance.
An initial course of 6 to 10 sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis is recommended to achieve the best results. Then reassess for further treatments and frequency of sessions.
